Seattle’s Gay Pride Parade has been a staple of the city’s Pride celebrations for 40 years. The parade route through downtown is always lined with onlookers and supporters. But this year, there was another group represented, at least for a while. The Bible thumpers thought they would be able to stop the parade this year. But they never counted on Mama Tits.
Mama Tits is a fixture in Seattle’s gay community. With co-hostesses Sylvia O’Stayformore and DonnaTella Howe, Mama hosts Mimosas with Mama, a Sunday brunch with flair:
Think of “Mimosas with Mama” as dinner theater during the day, it’s Brunch Theater! We have a breakfast buffet, a brunch menu, a full bar, JELL-O shots and Drag Queens! What more could you ask for on a Sunday?
Let the cast of “Mimosas with Mama” take you on a crazy, wild, fun journey you never knew you wanted to take. Its comedy, lip syncing, live singing, performance art, audience participation, great food, fabulous drinks and Fierce Queens all rolled up into 1 fabulous show!
Mama and her cast have also been a regular part of the Seattle Gay Pride Parade. This past Sunday — June 29 — Mama came face to…er…. bosom with a group of Bible thumpers as the parade began. They were loud and waved signs, which they used to try to hit parade participants. As they formed a wall, Mama entreated the crowd to drown the protestors out. The leader tried to march past Mama Tits but she blocked him at every move. Then he tried to hit her with his sign. The group surrounded Mama, trying to intimidate her. You can see from the picture that isn’t something Mama needs to worry about. As she tells it:
“I pushed his sign away from my face… And, it was all I could do to NOT get violent, but I didn’t because once that happens, we all lose. They tried to surround me in an intimidation tactic, but let’s face it, I’m fucking HUGE and it didn’t work at all! The police came to me and asked to let them pass, and told me not to let them get me upset. I told the cops I wasn’t upset, but I WILL defend myself when assaulted, and they needed to remove them from our Parade. I then walked over and grabbed my mic and started to get the crowd involved. I wanted them to make so much joyful noise to drown out the hate… and, boy did they ever! The crowd made the walls rattle down on 4th and Pine!”
Mama then heard the man reciting verses from Leviticus, so she chided him about his cotton/poly blend shirt. She asked if he’d eaten shellfish lately. If he’d sold his daughter for goats or slept in the same bed as his wife during her period. Isn’t it interesting how many Christians who believe the Bible is literally true, ignore things in it that don’t fit their agenda? And how it’s always a non-Christian who has to point this out?
This group that tried to stop the parade are a fixture in downtown Seattle. I’ve seen them as we go to concerts or games at Safeco Field. They are loud and obnoxious and in-your-face with their signs and megaphone. These are people who need to get a life. When you are so insecure in your beliefs that you have to wave signs and verbally assault people who aren’t doing anything but enjoying their lives, you really need to examine yours. Mama Tits put it this way:
“People take their lives because of HATE like this, people get KILLED because of HATE like this. I just want it all to stop! If the HATE mongers would put down their signs and open their minds and REPENT for their judgments, maybe then they too could find joy and happiness and be part of the fun, instead of being part of the Hell.”
