Imagine going to the beach one weekday in hope of catching some rays and some well-deserved peace and quiet, only to have some snotty kids in their twenties humiliate you with demeaning comments about your body. That’s what happened to “Tannis,” a 33-year-old mother of five.
Not content with saying they were “grossed out” loud enough for Tannis to hear, these mean, ugly beach bullies pointed, laughed, and pretended to kick her! This spirited woman played it cool, but then “cried in the car on the drive home.”
We constantly hear about “fat-shaming” but this is just as bad. Apparently, merely being thin isn’t good enough for these young connoisseurs. Tannis weighs a scant 125 pounds, but had the nerve to wear a bikini swim suit that exposed her stretchmarks and tummy pooch. It was the first time she’d worn a bikini in public in 13 years, and she has to put of with this crap?
What you want to wear at the beach should be your own business, and body shaming seriously needs to stop.
No wonder a recent Harris poll found that one third of Americans say they haven’t worn a swim suit in public in years, and 20 percent say they haven’t done so in 10 years. Even worse, a Fitness Magazine poll of 1,000 women reveals that one in four readers — twenty five percent! — say that if Justin Timberlake invited them to a beach party, they’d decline because they don’t feel they’re in good enough shape.
Luckily, Tannis got her revenge. She went on Facebook, visited her appropriately-named local radio station, HOT 102, and posted a photo of her bikini body … with a special message for her tormenters. And Ryder — a morning host by day and a dancer by night (who, in his own words, “dances his tight little @ss off”) — re-posted it to Hot 102’s page for their entire audience to see.
A lady from Sherwood Park named Tannis posted this pic yesterday, with the following message….
This is an open letter to the 2 guys and 1 girl who decided to skip work today in Sherwood Park where they were building a house, but instead decided to come to Alberta Beach to relax in the sun, enjoy the water and some beers.
I’m sorry if my first attempt at sun tanning in a bikini in public in 13 years “grossed you out”. I’m sorry that my stomach isn’t flat and tight. I’m sorry that my belly is covered in stretch marks. I’m NOT sorry that my body has housed, grown, protected, birthed and nurtured FIVE fabulous, healthy, intelligent and wonderful human beings. I’m sorry if my 33 year old, 125 lb body offended you so much that you felt that pointing, laughing, and pretending to kick me. But I’ll have you know that as I looked at your ‘perfect’ young bodies, I could only think to myself “what great and amazing feat has YOUR body done?”.
I’ll also have you know that I held my head high, unflinching as you mocked me, pretending that what you said and did had no effect on me; but I cried in the car on the drive home. Thanks for ruining my day. It’s people like you who make this world an ugly hateful place. I can’t help but feel sorry for the women who will one day bear your children and become “gross” in your eyes as their bodies change during the miraculous process of pregnancy. I can only hope that one day you’ll realize that my battle scars are something to be proud of, not ashamed of.
