Right-wing group and anti-Obamacare rhetoric machine optout.org was probably praying that their new ad would go viral — and their prayers were answered. The problem is, this video is going viral for all the completely wrong reasons. Probably one of the biggest factors in getting the Affordable Care Act — Obamacare — to succeed is in young adult participation. Both sides of the aisle know it, and that’s why Opt Out released this horrid video that you’re about to watch.
Riddled with creepy imagery (like the Uncle Sam character who looks more like the King from those Burger King ads than anything else), the ad tries to insinuate that the government will be involved in a woman’s reproductive health choices. At one point Creepy Uncle Sam even holds up a speculum before moving in closer to the young woman in the ad, who happens to be in a doctor’s gown, feet in stirrups. It boggles the mind that the same political movement that is writing hundreds of laws restricting access to abortion and defunding Planned Parenthood has the audacity to insinuate the ACA — which provides women to free or extremely affordable contraceptive health benefits as well as forces insurance companies to stop treating “having a vagina” as a preexisting condition — somehow puts more government control into a woman’s control over her body. But here’s this ad, doing exactly that.
How can this group think that showing an ad as creepy and lame as this one will convince young people to turn down the insurance plans that state exchange sites are starting to show will come in around $100 a month? No one under the age of 30 is going to see Psycho Sam and decide against Obamacare, but they may decide to vote against the party that’s trying to keep them from getting access to extremely affordable health care, couldn’t they? This ad is so beyond the pale of normalcy it’s hard to imagine it not backfiring in quite spectacular fashion, and that’s precisely what’s happening on social media today.
Well, enough talking about it. Prepare yourself for about 62 seconds of pure, unadulterated WTF-ery.
