Being gay may not be a choice, but being stupid is — as is demonstrated, repeatedly, by Texas Governor Rick Perry. On Wednesday, Perry made a startling comparison between alcoholism and homosexuality: both are pretty much the same…you know, in the same way that pepper spray is a food product (RIGHT, Megyn Kelly?).
“Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that,” Perry said during an appearance at the Commonwealth Club of California.
Perry spoke, of course, in favor of the Texas GOP’s recent adoption of “reparative therapy,” a discredited practice of using self-hatred and shame to change a person’s sexual orientation.
“I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that,” he said, “And I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”
Perry has used the “gays are the same as alcoholics” rhetoric before. In his 2008 book, On My Honor, Perry wrote, “Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink,” adding, “And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.”
Perry is stepping down as Governor at the end of his current term, and may be running for President in 2016.
