Here’s a taste of what’s waiting for us in January if the Republicans win next month: Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Galapagos) claimed that he’s willing to, with a simple majority, repeal Obamacare if he takes over as the majority leader in January.
His spokesman told the Washington Examiner on Thursday, days before the midterm elections. The Republicans stand a strong chance of seizing the upper chamber from the Democrats and, if that happens, he of the multiple repeating consonants will be in charge.
Spokesman Brian McGuire wrote in an emailed state that:
Leader McConnell is and has always been committed to the full repeal of Obamacare, and he’ll continue to lead efforts to repeal and replace it with patient-centered reforms that enable greater choice at lower costs. He knows it won’t be easy, but he also believes that if Republicans are fortunate enough to take back the majority we’ll owe it to the American people to try through votes on full repeal, the bill’s most onerous provisions, and reconciliation.
This is a brilliant tactic. There are millions of Americans benefiting from Obamacare, and how far they’re willing to go in order to strip those Americans of those benefits is inevitably going to become a top issue if they take the majority. It’s an idée fixe of the hard right, and it’s going to be something they’ll have to confront.
McConnell had recently made the claim on Fox that “it would take 60 votes in the Senate, and no one thinks we’re going to have 60 Republicans.” Reconciliation, however, is a parliamentary maneuver that allows legislation to be passed without the usual 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
The Democrats used the procedure to get Obamacare across the finish line, and it’s not certain how much of the law could be repealed through the measure. The law’s spending provisions could probably be repealed, but the regulations that aren’t directly tied to the budget probably couldn’t be.
I welcome The Geriatric Mutant Congressional Turtle to try repealing it. It’ll be an unmitigated disaster and inflict pointless harm on millions of Americans for no greater purpose than meeting the goals of warped ideological sadism.
