In a private meeting at the beginning of February, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his staff weighed their attack options if faced with Ashley Judd as an opponent. A tape of the meeting was given to Mother Jones magazine who released it earlier today. McConnell has notified the FBI and is accusing Democrats of “Watergate-style” tactics, however Mother Jones claims that accusation is off the mark. The person who gave them the tape remains anonymous.
During the meeting, McConnell and his aides talked about Judd’s past struggles with Depression as well as her non-traditional religious views. At one point Sen. McConnell compared preliminary political races to the carnival game Whac-A-Mole in which “when anybody sticks their head up, do them out.”
Judd released a statement in reaction to McConnell possibly using her issues with mental illness against her, saying:
This is yet another example of the politics of personal destruction that embody Mitch McConnell and are pervasive in Washington, D.C. We expected nothing less from Mitch McConnell and his camp than to take a personal struggle such as depression, which many Americans cope with on a daily basis and turn it into a laughing matter.
