Jefferson County Recorder of Deeds Debbie Dunnegan insists that she meant “no ill intent” towards President Obama after she asked if the U.S. Military was able to oust the President In a Facebook post.
This is another situation where it’s not “I’m sorry I said something stupid,” it’s, “I’m sorry I got caught.” If you were looking for a real apology, you won’t find one here.
The Missouri Republican referred to Obama as “our domestic enemy,” and wrote in the post that:
I have a question for all my friends who have served or are currently serving in our military … having not put on a uniform nor taken any type military oath, there has to be something that I am just not aware of. But I cannot and do not understand why no action is being taken against our domestic enemy. I know he is supposedly the commander in chief,[sic] but the constitution gives you the authority. What am I missing? Thank you for your bravery and may God keep you safe.
What are you missing? We’re glad you asked! How about 18 U.S. Code § 2385 – Advocating overthrow of Government for starters?
Whoever knowingly or willfully advocates, abets, advises, or teaches the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying the government of the United States or the government of any State, Territory, District or Possession thereof, or the government of any political subdivision therein, by force or violence, or by the assassination of any officer of any such government; or
Whoever, with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of any such government, prints, publishes, edits, issues, circulates, sells, distributes, or publicly displays any written or printed matter advocating, advising, or teaching the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying any government in the United States by force or violence, or attempts to do so; or
Whoever organizes or helps or attempts to organize any society, group, or assembly of persons who teach, advocate, or encourage the overthrow or destruction of any such government by force or violence; or becomes or is a member of, or affiliates with, any such society, group, or assembly of persons, knowing the purposes thereof—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.
If two or more persons conspire to commit any offense named in this section, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.
As used in this section, the terms “organizes” and “organize”, with respect to any society, group, or assembly of persons, include the recruiting of new members, the forming of new units, and the regrouping or expansion of existing clubs, classes, and other units of such society, group, or assembly of persons.
Naturally, Dunnegan — who is up for re-election in November — played dumb, using the “out-of-context” card, claiming that it was “something innocent and simple” that was “twisted into a disaster because it’s an election.” She added that “I meant no ill intent toward the president. I meant no ill intent toward anybody.”
‘No, ill intent,’ she says? First she called the President ‘our domestic enemy’ and then innocently asked if the U.S. Military could simply stage a military coup against the duly elected President of the United State of America. In a time of war, no less. That’s a perfectly innocent question. Riiiiight.
Waters’ Facebook account is private, but she’s said that she hasn’t deleted the post, and isn’t worried about its potential impacts on her bid for re-election, adding that “I think it could hurt it as much as it could help it.”
Extremist, anti-American rhetoric will always help win the Teabagger vote. For the rest of us? Let’s just say that a military dictatorship is not preferable to the current oligarchy we’re pushing back against, thank you.
