We don’t know what these black kids in Kansas City, Missouri were expecting when Officers Krebs and Smith pulled up in his police cruiser, but it probably wasn’t Jolly Ranchers or ‘the octopus.’
On Sunday, August 10th, while horrified neighbors in Ferguson were tweeting photos of unarmed teenager Michael Brown lying dead on the street after police shot him 10 times, Krebs and Smith were doing a different kind of community outreach entirely.
KSHB 41 reports Smith and Krebs offered the kids jolly ranchers, and then challenged them to a dance-off. Meanwhile, a neighbor caught the whole thing on camera.
A fun time was had by all, even though Krebs turned out to be a terrible dancer. He had the kids in hysterics over his attempts at break dancing and an original move he called “the octopus.”
Krebs told reporters:
“When I joined the police force I told them I wanted to build rapport with the community because I feel like if we build rapport with them then they are more likely to call us when they need us.”
Police departments across the nation could stand to learn something from Krebs.
Watch police officer Krebs bust a move.
