In the wake the police gunning down of an unarmed Black teen and the following outrage, Missouri residents are racing to arm themselves.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that an area gun dealer, Mid America Arms, has seen gun sales spike by 50% since the looting and rioting. Owner Al Rothweiler told the paper that the most popular sales were semi-automatic handguns and shotguns, and that the number of female shoppers has also sharply increased.
Rothweiler explained that the local happenings “have made people act,” but added that he doesn’t like “selling on fear.”
I thought that fear of a home invasion and safety were the primary reasons for buying a gun. In this perspective, I’d hazard that almost 90% of all guns are “sold on fear” (I grab my statistics from the aether, which is still more reliable than FOX). It seems hard to blame them, thought, given the police are turning Missouri town into a mini-police state.
Other gun stores report similar windfalls. General manager of Metro Shooting Supplies, John Stephenson, told the Post-Dispatch that firearm sales were “through the roof.” And while it’s been mostly men buying firearms, owner Steven King pointed out to KMOX that other groups had been involved as well. King told KMOX that:
“Probably a dozen or two dozen guns to females, single mothers. We’ve sold to black people, white people. We’ve sold to asians [sic] who have businesses on West Florissant.” said King. “They’re just afraid of whats going on and they’re coming in to purchase either additional firearms or their first firearm.”
King added that he has ” personally seen the fear in their eyes and feels the sorrow in their heart,” and isn’t raising prices. Most of the guns, he said, are for “defensive” purposes, saying that “they’re buying AR-15s, home defense shotguns, handguns, personal defense handguns something for conceal carry.”
