A large section of Mississippi Republicans have embraced a Tea Party candidate in the state’s upcoming Senate race who has given speeches to neo-Confederate groups.
State Senator Chris McDaniel has announced his candidacy against incumebt Senator Thad Cochran, and could well take the seat. Earlier this year McDaniel spoke at an event organised by the Jones County Rosin Heels, a local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (I have checked; there are daughters too).
At an event advertised as being for “politically incorrect folks”, McDaniels addressed a crowd one could easily dismiss as eccentric cranks (which they are), but they are also sinister fanatics.
“The Jones County Heels have been pretty clear about its secessionist sentiments, Mother Jones further noted. The group’s newsletter said in September said that “we are living in the times that Jefferson Davis predicted would one day come” where the disagreements that resulted in the Civil War arose again.”
Its parent group, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, claims to represent the “citizen-soldiers who fought for the Confederacy” who “personified the best qualities of America” in what the group claims was the “Second American Revolution”.
The American Civil War was the result of an attempted counter-revolution against the foundational values and principles of the United States. The appalling conflict pitted the motto of “Deo Vindice” against the First Amendment. It saw a cadre of Christian fanatics attempt to wrest themselves from the first modern nation founded on the secular values of the Enlightenment. It was the reaction of a racist slave-state against a state which, though rife with imperfections of its own, was prepared to openly debate, pursue, and achieve the eventual abolition of slavery in a vindication of Thomas Paine’s ‘Rights of Man’.
For a man seeking high office to choose to speak not once but twice at a grouping of Confederate sympathisers is a disgrace to the memory of both the Founding Fathers and the thousands of victims of that terrifying war. But being a Tea Partier, speaking to a bunch of white racists who pine for the days when they could still own slaves might actually help him!
