Michigan’s right wing-dominated legislature has a proud tradition of ignorance and stupidity. Take right to
work starve laws, for example. Well, they have somehow managed to outdo legislation that cripples workers’ ability to fight for fair wages and benefits with an effort to make it as difficult as possible for women to have an abortion–even in the instance of conception through “God’s Will” rape and incest.
On Wednesday evening, Michigan (in a mostly party line vote) became the 24th state to approve a measure that would require the purchase of a “rape insurance” rider if women want abortion coverage–period. Ignoring the numerous and varied reasons why a woman would choose not to have a child, the Michigan legislature has decided that sexual assault victims should be forced to pay the full bill if they are placed in the unfortunate situation that warrants the procedure–unless they expected to be a victim of rape, of course.
The law requires the purchase of an additional rider. So ladies, if you don’t wake up expecting to be brutally violated, it’s about time that you start!
Republican Governor Rick Snyder actually vetoed a bill with anti-woman language similar to the newly-passed legislation because “it treats situations that involve rape, incest and health of the mother as elective abortions.” Snyder doesn’t believe it is appropriate to tell a woman who becomes pregnant due to a rape that she needs to select elective insurance coverage, despite his own views.
Despite Snyder’s reticence on the matter, anti-woman groups used an obscure Michigan law to push through another vote and remove that pesky Governor from the equation entirely. With something as simple as a petition and a law allowing “citizen-initiated votes,” abortion opponents were able to push through this terrible legislation. The petition drive by anti-choice group Right to Life gathered 315,477 signatures–or just 4% of Michigan’s population, allowing a small number of crazies to once again impose their will on the general populace.
