Of all the signs of an emotionally abusive relationship, one stands above the rest as absolutely definitive of the condition: When someone blames you for their own behavior, also known as assigning blame to the victim.
Classic examples fall along the lines of “You made me hit you because you: dress like a slut, won’t stop talking, are always looking at other guys, etc.” Or “You knew what I was going to do/how I was going to react, and you kept pushing my buttons.” Or “If you didn’t like it, why didn’t you just leave?” But it always comes down to one line:
“You MADE me do this.”
Michele Bachmann and Cruz’s Tea Party Blame Reactor has been running at 110% since before the shutdown even began, and they’ve been grasping at every straw available to pin this disaster on everyone but themselves. But the public’s not buying it.
Since the shutdown, about 38% of Americans blame the GOP, 19% blame both Dems and the GOP, and 30% blame Obama. No prizes for guessing who THAT 30% is.
And it’s getting darker by the day for Republicans. Last week, 63% disapproved of the GOP‘s handling of the situation; this week, it’s up to 70%. And 9% fewer people are blaming Obama now than the 39% who said they would the day before the shutdown.
Just the other day, Bachmann “accidentally” found herself at the WWII memorial, “using her authority to let seniors in.”
“No, absolutely not. Because what we did is we sent over four different spending bills to fully fund government, to fund THIS memorial…we sent them over, and Harry Reid refused to even look at them, and President Obama refused to look at them at all.”
Oh, very true, Michele. Obama DID refuse to look at the bills you sent over, and he’s not negotiating piecemeal with you. Matter of fact, he’s being pretty uncompromising about the whole thing. But, you know…that’s what you get when you tell someone that his job is to never negotiate with terrorists.
About 45% of Americans approve perfectly well of his determined approach. Which, subtracting for the 30% who wouldn’t agree with the way he tied his shoes, means about 65% of the people who aren’t committed Teabaggers DO agree with his no-compromise approach.
Anything else, Michele?
Why, yes. Michele Bachmann is now invoking the long-respected Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle of Executive Tweets to place blame on Obama’s head.
“We’re being told right now to fund Obamacare. But the bill that we’ve passed is not the one that we’re funding. President Obama changed the bill just by Tweeting it out. so he’s asking us to change a bill that he’s Tweeted. That’s against the law.”
Did you catch that? Yeah, we didn’t either.
Bachmann’s communications director (because you NEED a communications director to make sense of your statements if you’re Michelle Bachmann) said that she was referring to Obama’s announcement on a blog post regarding the one-year delay of the employer mandate. Which was on Treasury.gov…not Twitter. Michele.
Bachmann’s aide parroted her statement, which has become a popular parrot point for Teabaggers:
“Instead of unilaterally legislating by social media, the Obama administration should follow the Constitution and stop cherry picking which portions of the law they wish to enforce.”
Well, that might be a pretty good point for the Supreme Court to debate. You know, seeing as how they are the sole and final arbiters of what jives with the Constitution and what doesn’t. True, the Constitution doesn’t say that a president CAN do that…but it also doesn’t specifically say that he CAN’T. And there’s no amendment to cover it. It’s still a constitutional gray area…much like the legality of owning an AK-47 or a rocket launcher.
Guess Teabaggers aren’t the only ones who can lawyer the Constitution. Sucks, doesn’t it?
At the end of the day, Bachmann’s just another Tea Party monkey, grasping for straws to plug the holes in her sinking ship. GOP polls are down, Tea Party polls are WAY down, and our Teabagger-hostage Congress has lower ratings than head lice. But don’t try to tell any Teabagger that. You’ll always get the same response.
“Hey, don’t blame us…YOU MADE US DO THIS.”
