The domestic terrorist who threatened Planned Parenthood staff and patients with an assault weapon for five hours is in custody of the Colorado Springs, Colo. authorities. He killed one police officer and two civilians during the standoff. The gunman also wounded nine others, including five police officers. All were taken to local hospitals and are in good condition. The killer is just fine.
Robert Lewis Dear, a white 57-year-old man from North Carolina, was booked and will appear in court Monday. Well over 100 law enforcement members worked for hours in the freezing snow to talk Dear out of the Planned Parenthood clinic, where he was barricaded along with an unidentified number of terrified, wounded, and murdered staff and civilians.

The media have described Dear as a confused man with mental health issues. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s office released Dear’s booking photo, and police spokesman, Lt. Catherine Buckley spoke to reporters:
“We don’t have any information on this individual’s mentality, or his ideas or ideology.”
Dear killed 44-year-old Garrett Swasey, who was with the University of Colorado and came to help, along with two as yet unidentified citizens. In a huge show of force, the Colorado Springs Police Department, Fire Department, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department, SWAT teams, snipers, the FBI, and ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) descended upon Planned Parenthood.
Why did they work so hard to talk this guy out of the building? Didn’t any sniper have the opportunity to take him out? Then the gnawing question becomes: why do white home-grown terrorists receive such different treatment than black men and boys? The Charleston, N.C. police took mass murderer Dylann Storm Roof to Burger King for a free meal on the way to jail.
The answer may lie with the media. Why isn’t the media labeling Dear as a “domestic terrorist?” Why are they painting white killers as confused people with mental health issues while blacks are labeled as thugs living a thug life, and said to be deserving of whatever they get, which is often death by police. Black men and children who are unarmed, even handcuffed, die at the end of guns handled by police who are sworn to “protect and serve.”
Look at how the media chooses what it releases. Yahoo.com reported that Dear lived in a “small cabin in North Carolina with no electricity or running water about a half-mile up a twisty dirt road near Black Mountain.” It also reported that Dear’s neighbor, James Russell said:
“If you talked to him, nothing with him was very cognitive — topics all over place,”
NBCnews.com, released information from Kentanya Craion who escaped the building:
“The gunman ‘seemed calm, but crazy,’ describing the man in a hunter’s jacket and hat as “mumbling and ranting while he was shooting.”
CNN addressed the motivation of the killer:
“There’s the challenge of making sense of all this bloodshed: Why, on the day after Thanksgiving, would a man walk up to a clinic with his guns out and then hold out for hours before finally surrendering?”
The Washington Post reported Dear’s surrender:
“Buckley said officers then managed to get into the building and shout at the suspect to give himself up, after which he emerged from the building with his hands raised.”
The New York Times reported:
“Despite being at a heightened state of alert, F.B.I. officials in Washington appeared caught off guard in the hours after the shooting and said that they knew little about what occurred.”
Contrast the treatment of black men and boys with the Colorado Springs’ police handling of Dear:
- Chicago: Police shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times, execution style, while he was handcuffed.
- Ferguson Mo: The grand-jury decided not to indict the Ferguson, Mo., police officer who shot and killed unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown while he was holding his arms in the air.
- Cleveland: A police officer shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice last year after responding to call of a someone with a gun, who was possibly a “child” with a “toy.” The child was holding a pellet gun.
- Seattle: Police killed 37-year-old Daniel Covarrubias, who had been hospitalized for hallucinations. He was spotted at a lumber yard and fired upon when officers mistook a cellphone in his hand for a weapon.
Colorado Springs law enforcement gave Planned Parenthood the support and protection it deserved. When will police start providing all citizens equal protection? Change could begin with how the media ‘white’ washes crime and refuses to label the Planned Parenthood killer as a domestic terrorist.
