For the second time in two weeks, vandals have defaced the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge in Fort Wayne, Indiana with racist and vulgar language.
Among other slurs, benches on the bridge have been covered with racist slurs, including “Death to mixed racers.” the graffiti also made references to Joseph Paul Franklin, a white supremacist who was sentenced to death last November.
Franklin was responsible for the deaths of twenty-two people, including women and children across at least eleven states. Franklin said he was “doing the will of God” in his bid to ignite a race war. He said that he hoped that by showing white supremacists how to exterminate mixed-race couples, he would encourage others to follow suit. Shortly before his execution, Franklin expressed regret for his actions and said that he felt that he deserved to die for the murders.
Two weeks ago, the image of Dr. King had a smiley face spray painted over it.
