With Mark Sanford’s election victory came a lot of media attention for Sanford’s problematic past. Chris Wallace of Fox News and Sanford both agreed that the details around Sanford’s life were starting to sound like a National Enquirer tabloid headline. Wallace’s pause and verbal reality check was immediately repeated by the Sanford while following up on a line of questions around details of plans to celebrate the victory.
“You are now engaged to the woman with whom you had the affair, Maria Belen Chapur. She made a brief appearance … at your victory party which raised some eyebrows. Question: What did your boys think of that? And, your four boys, and have they accepted her?”, Wallace pressed.
Sanford dodged the question, “I’m not going to go into inner family conversations, but I would just say it is what it is.”
Wallace continued to pressure Sanford with the obviously uncomfortable subject.
“Do you have a date for your wedding and will your fiancée—will she come to Washington to live with you? I feel like I’m the National Enquirer here.”
Sanford jumped in quickly with, “Exactly. Is this Fox News or National Enquirer? So, I’m not going to make news on that front tonight—or this morning.”
