An Oregon man exercised his Second Amendment right to use his assault rifle as a crutch to help him stand as he was rising from a couch at a friend’s apartment, and you can pretty well guess the rest. The responsible gun owner showed no concern that his boomstick was loaded, and unleashed a rain of freedom metal into the ceiling, killing a little girl, five-year-old Alyssa Bobbitt, and wounding apartment resident Karen Hancock, upstairs.
Jon Andrew Meyer Jr. attempted the tried-and-true “It were an accident” defense, and his defense lawyer claims Meyer had been assured the gun was not fully automatic.
The victims were visiting friends in the apartment, but it is unclear why Meyer brought his trusty assault rifle with him. Meyer is currently under a restraining order, and his fiancee had kicked him out. Currently, he is listed as residing in his sister’s home.
According to the restraining order filed by his fiance, Victoria Kohout on June 20, Meyer is an “unpredictable drug addict” who had threatened her with a gun, and to burn down her house, slash her tires, and break out the windows in her car.
According to a neighbor, Meyer ran down the driveway soon before Danielle Wilson, Alyssa Bobbit’s mother, came outside. “She looked up at me and said, `Please, help my baby,” the neighbor said.
Meyer is being held on $250,000 bail on charges of manslaughter, assault, and unlawful possession of a machine gun.
It’s no secret that gun fetishists are a little bit–OK, a LOT– insane, willing to do nearly anything to advance gun “rights” so that people like Meyer can mow down a small child because he is too lazy to stand up properly. However, isn’t it about time that we consider sensible gun regulations in order to prevent someone like Meyer from having access to weapons? People like this–and the fine Tea Partiers who support open carry legislation–only serve to set back truly responsible gun owners everywhere.
