Radical right wing activist James O’Keefe is at it again, using his usual tactics of attempting to induce Democratic activists to violate the law and, failing that, editing his video “evidence” to make it seem that they have.
Last week O’Keefe took his video equipment and Project Veritas “actors” to Charlotte, North Carolina, to attempt to “prove” that voting by undocumented immigrants is rampant in the state with the full approval of the Democratic party.
He presented his evidence: a video that shows a woman asking Greg Amick, the former campaign manager for Democratic candidate for Meck County Sheriff, Irwin Carmichael, if she should vote. She said she is registered, but that she is also an undocumented immigrant.
Carmichael said Amick told the woman that if she is an undocumented immigrant she should not vote, something that the video does not show.
“That’s edited out where he says, ‘You need to go inside and talk to the board of elections,'” Carmichael said.
O’Keefe insists that the video is accurate and says that officials should be looking into it, because a recent survey shows that it was likely the votes of undocumented immigrants that gave the state to Barack Obama in 2008. O’Keefe claimed that the information comes from the Washington Post, to lend legitimacy to his assertions.
In fact, the study he refers to was reported in the Post, which identified serious flaws in the methods used and conclusions reached in the study by the Cooperative Congressional Election Study.
The study relied on self-reported voting by undocumented immigrants, and from that sample, extrapolated that it was possible in some cases there are enough votes cast by ineligible voters to change the outcome of an election.
The Post also reported that the most popular method for preventing this supposed fraud, ID laws, are largely ineffective since three-quarters of the non-citizens who claim to have voted also reported that they had a valid driver’s license.
O’Keefe says that the authorities now have his “evidence” and that it is up to them to decide whether to act on it or not.
State Representative Carla Cunningham (D) agrees that an investigation is called for, however it is O’Keefe she wants investigated. She said that one of her campaign workers was approached by Project Veritas actors, who attempted to induce her to violate the law.
“He told her he had an envelope he wanted to give her, and it had names of people with dementia and he wanted me to get it to help these people vote,” Cunningham said.
She said the envelope contained a jump drive and that she did not look at the information on it but she intends to turn it over to authorities.
Every time O’Keefe presents us with “evidence” of criminal behavior, it seems that there is indeed a crime being committed. Unfortunately for O’Keefe, he and his band of merry pranksters, are the ones committing the crime.
