If there is one thing that the TEApublicans in Congress are very good at it is playing fast and loose with the facts and Representative Tim Huelskamp (R, KS) proved on Friday when he appeared on right wing radio host Steve Deace’s show.
Huelskamp claimed that the American people will support them and not the President if they shut the government down over funding for Obamacare because 90% are opposed to the fact that “every single person under Obamacare” will be required to pay a surcharge of $1 every month on their insurance premiums to fund abortion. He goes on to say that most of that money is going to go directly to Planned Parenthood.
It may be that he is just unaware of what the law does say but if not the only conclusion left for one to draw is that he is intentionally lying. Of course when a politician lies no one should be surprised, that is what they do for a living, but this particular lie was exposed and debunked months ago, before the Supreme Court had even ruled on the Constitutionality of the law.
The provision that he is talking about was put into the law for the express purpose of preventing tax payer funding of abortions. It requires that a woman wanting abortion coverage from her policy must, if she is receiving a government subsidy for her insurance, be charged an additional premium of at least one dollar for that coverage. Moreover, many women will qualify under the Medicaid expansion created by the law and would not be eligible for any abortion coverage under the provisions of the Hyde Amendment.
The general consensus is that the provision may actually reduce access to abortion coverage since many insurers will simply cease to provide coverage in order to avoid the additional administrative hurdles that providing it would create. It will be easier to just stop writing policies that will cover it.
The only reason that any of these tactics work at all is that the base of the TEApublican voters will never research any of their claims no matter how blatantly wrong they seem to be, they will simply accept it as fact and perpetuate the falsehoods.
