Grover Norquist, one of the founding members of the Project for a New American Century, and one of the original supply-side neocons, actually laid it all out for us in 2004 in simple terms. He said, ” I just want to shrink (government) down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.”
1. Oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses; and
2. Oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates.”
In the version for state legislators, the signer pledges that:
“I will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.”
In the 112th Congress serving in years 2011 and 2012, all but six of the 242 Republican members plus two Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives, for a total of 238 – a majority of that body – as well as all but seven of the 47 Republican members plus one Democratic member of the U.S. Senate, for a total of 41, have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. That means 279 legislators in this country have PLEDGED never to raise taxes.
Now for all of you with a working brain and the slightest understanding of the American economy, deeply cutting and refusing to ever increase revenue will cause a deficit and that deficit WILL have a negative impact on borrowing (MORE DEBT). So, now our GOP friends have created that nice debt figure for audio-visual effect. (and yes, spending huge amounts of money off-budget to fund elective wars has also killed our financial security) The Republicans can now clamor for huge cuts.
If you’re paying attention, you now know that by leaving yourself only one option for dealing with the economy, you have the perfect scenario for SHRINKING GOVERNMENT! As a matter of fact, it’s nearly small enough now to fit into a standard bathtub drain, and when it’s drowned, it’s gone.
I’ll be referring back to this scenario in a second, but now, I want to look at Social Security and why Paul Ryan is a scumbag.
Social Security has, from its inception, been funded by a payroll tax. That tax has always been collected outside of the budget and has never impacted the deficit by a single penny. Social Security would today, have a surplus of 2.6 trillion dollars but for one thing, the government has raped the account. That’s right, nearly 3 trillion of our estimated 16 trillion dollar debt, is OWED TO SOCIAL SECURITY. That money was paid into the trust fund by regular working people over their working lives. People all over the country in every demographic literally depend on the returns of their investment to live on!
So here it is in a nutshell. The Republicans have inflated our debt by a series of tax cuts (revenue cuts). Those same Republicans refuse to increase revenue…EVER. Our Republican friends raise sheer HELL about the debt. They finally insist on cutting government services as the only way to right the sinking ship.
And now, Paul Ryan and his cronies (the drown the shrunken government in a bathtub folks) are saying we need to cut Social Security benefits to balance the budget. They actually want to cut services to the people they actually stole the money from in the first place, to make things look better. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has been almost single-handedly fighting the battle to stop this thievery, for a long time. Sanders recently in a speech before Congress, said:
“Instead of talking about cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, we must end the absurdity of corporations not paying a nickel in federal income taxes, we cannot cut programs that working families depend on.”
So there you have it. This whole process of cutting taxes, giving corporate tax breaks, griping about the resulting deficit, and then demanding cuts from the very people who did not cause any of this, is a well-planned, long-term strategy. Grover Norquist was not the only bad guy, but he was certainly a key member of the conspiracy. Ronald Reagan, Alan Greenspan, and a host of others have also been willing participants. I’m hoping America will wake up and see what’s being done to them in the name of shrunken government and more powerful corporations. I’m hoping.
