If you thought conservatives were going to sit idly by while President Obama, the Supreme Court, and the Democratic Party upgrade LGBT Americans to actual citizens rather than second-class citizens, think again.
Incredibly, a city councilman in Louisiana is drafting a new set of bigoted ordinances that would ban the flying of any rainbow flags on any public property.
After the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act last month, LGBT members of Lafayette, Louisiana gathered in Girard Park for the annual Pride in the Park celebration. Of course, the rainbow flag was flying high, given the fact that it has come to represent LGBT pride.
After local newspaper ran a photo in the next day’s paper of participants hoisting the rainbow flag, Ray Green, a bigot with antiquated beliefs, actually went out of his way to bring the photograph to the attention of Andy Noquin, a City-Parish councilman, who incredibly found his complaint to be legitimate and is now drafting legislation that would outlaw the flying of the rainbow flag in any public venue.
Green, who served in the Korean War, explained that he found the flag offensive:
“I did not go overseas and fight for our country so that we could come back and be subject to something like that,” Green said Friday.
“Several of us (veterans) feel that the flying of this flag is a poke in the eye of a way of life.”
Of course, his bigotry has so clouded his judgment, he conveniently ignores the fact that there are innumerable gay Americans who defended, and continue to defend our country.
He went on to tell the paper that while he is not “against the case,” he is opposed to “the act itself.”
This is enough to make any progressive American’s blood boil. Just because this man is opposed to the sexual orientation and habits of other consenting adults, he feels that the state has the right to trample on even the most basic First Amendment rights to free speech of LGBT Americans.
These conservatives are so scared by an ever-changing America that they considered even the flying of a rainbow flag to be an affront to their “way of life.”
Unfortunately for them, America is turning the corner on a dark past of discrimination towards LGBT Americans, and there is nothing that conservative bigots can do to stop that.
This type of action is precisely why young Americans are running away from the bigoted GOP in droves. How do they expect 21st-century Americans to vote for a party that relegates their LGBT brothers and sisters to the status of second-class citizens?
