Lunatic TEApublican: Obamacare is Racist Because Only White People Use…Tanning Beds?

While speaking at a Florida town hall meeting last week, Congressman Ted Yoho (R-Idiot) made the claim that The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, is racist because within it is a provision to tax tanning beds and that’s prejudiced against white people since they’re generally the only ones who use them.

Here’s what Yoho said:

I had a little fun with Boehner and told him about the sun tanning tax.  He goes, ‘I didn’t know it was in there,’ and I said, ‘Yes, it’s a ten percent tax.’  He goes, ‘Well, that’s not that big of a deal.’  I said, ‘It’s a racist tax.’

The crowd, who apparently thinks racism in America is a simply hilarious subject (who wants to bet they were 99+% white?), then erupted into laughter.

Yoho continued:

He goes, ‘You know what, it is.’  I had an Indian doctor in our office the other day, very dark skin, with two non-dark skin people, and I asked this to him, I said, ‘Have you ever been to a tanning booth?’ and he goes, ‘No, no need.’   o therefore it’s a racist tax and I thought I might need to get to a sun tanning booth so I can come out and say I’ve been disenfranchised because I got taxed because of the color of my skin.  As crazy as that sounds, that’s what the left does right. By God, if it works for them, it’ll work for us.

You know….if we were all not connected at the hip, and actually took persobnal responsibility and paid our own (personal) insurance…instead of being part of the collective – then maybe one could smoke, or tan, or even eat bacon – without having everybody and their mother concerned with our welfare. Because we would have our OWN welfare! We don’t want your commie exchanges! This whole thing is collapsing upon itself anyway! No one needs to pay my health insurance, and no one needs to know my health information! Ever hear of HIPPA????

    • Bob Cull

I see that you’re another of those ACA experts who know nothing about the law, Jennifer. There is no “program” and therefore no “collective”. Most people will be paying in full for their own insurance, those who cannot afford it and do not qualify for Medicaid will get a subsidy to help pay for it.

Your comment about others not being entitled to know your health issues is completely ignorant. I assume you are one of those low/no information voters who believe the lies from the Teapubs and the likes of Limbaugh (hint, junkies are not reliable information sources) that the IRS is going to have access to your health records and that is what you are alluding to. That is a flat out lie and those promulgating it know that it is a lie. The IRS is only going to be required to ascertain that you have insurance and if you don’t assess a tax penalty. There will be a form along the lines of a W-2 which will be submitted with your return.

If you actually learn something about an issue before you start spouting off about it you will appear less foolish.

I need daily controlled dose UV light therapy for a medical condition. I can’t afford the $65 per visit so I use a tanning bed with one side turned off as a substitute. Does that make me stupid?? Maybe think before you type. (and yes, I detest ReThuglicans, too LOL

  • Rai_Eva

Have they ever heard of gyaru? It’s a japanese fashion that requires tan skin. Not to mention that anyone who used a tanning bed is stupid. It’s gross. Tanning bed skin is disgusting. It looks like cheap fake leather. And tanning has been proven as a carcinogen, so I don’t know why tanning beds are legal. I think tans are overall unattractive, but if people only used lotions and sprays, we wouldn’t have such a skincancer epidemic among younger people. I say the tax should be higher. Make it so high that no one can afford it and they’re forced to get some damn sense.

He knows the sun is still in the sky and will do the same job tax free?

  • Jeph

It’s almost like skin cancer is disproportionally racist towards whites with 22x higher rate than blacks

Also note yoho didn’t ask the other two ‘non-dark skin people’ if they used tanning beds

Now, no one forces any of us light skinned types to sit our butts down in a tanning salon, do they? I don’t have any intention of paying a tanning salon tax no matter how white I happen to be.. because I can’t imagine roasting myself like a hot dog. These teabaggers are insane. My take:

    • Bob Cull

How about this, Molly? We add a lifestyle question to applications for health insurance asking if the insured ever uses tanning beds. If they answer “yes” then they pay a 300% surcharge on their premium. Only a fool does not know that tanning beds/booths are dangerous, therefore only fools are using them and should have to pay extra based on the future medical expenses that their cancer treatments are going to cause.

I agree, Bob. Smokers have to pay higher premiums for health insurance policies.

  • Bob Cull

This seems to be a new talking point for them, I have seen it quite a bit lately. They keep coming up with “proof” that all blacks are racists. At first it was just the President but lately they have been insinuating that it is all blacks, they are all “out to get whitey.” Projecting?

OMG…what morons! The tax has been pushed by the skin cancer society’s. Not to mention when you consider the health risks for those who use tanning beds. Tanning is deadly especially to young people as it makes you more susceptible to skin cancers. Melanoma is a death sentence. I’m all for taxing them. And I strongly support those states who have finally passed laws outlawing tanning for those who are under the age of 18.
