“After months of waiting and speculation about who would take the lead, Sen. Lindsey Graham – not Sen. Marco Rubio – will be the chief sponsor of a bill designed to ban abortions nationwide after 20 weeks, or the point at which some scientific evidence says fetuses may feel pain.”“Sen. Lindsey Graham was champing at the bit to do it sooner rather than later,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, a major force behind the legislation. “There’s a point when you just have to go ahead. The timing is really now.”
“Since the rise of the Tea Party movement, the Right has found stunning success in its attempts to turn back decades of gains in the rights and status of women. The efforts to turn back the clock on American women focus on reproductive rights but also attack the changing roles in the workplace, in the family and in government that reproductive rights have helped to allow women to assume.
‘Anti-woman proposals that have been percolating in the right-wing fringe for years – such as “personhood” measures – are suddenly supported by mainstream presidential candidates. Rights that women have come to take for granted – like the right to access birth control – have suddenly come under attack for the first time in decades.”
PFAW also went on to list some of the more blatant attempts by state and federal legislatures to return to the 1950s in terms of women’s issues. From “personhood bills” to “TRAP” laws, to bills designed to limit women’s access to contraception and family planning resources, the list is simply…breathtaking.
But even with all of this, we have a Democratically controlled Senate and a sitting Democratic President, so it’s very unlikely Lindsey Graham and his cohorts will succeed in this draconian bill, so why the fuss?
Rachel Maddow put it this way:
“Because Graham and other Republicans hope to use culture-war measures like these to divide, possibly driving a wedge between Democrats and putting vulnerable red-state Dems in a difficult position. This is, after all, a time in which GOP leaders admit they’re more concerned with “messaging” than governing.”
And what message specifically, are the Republicans in Congress hoping to send. That’s an easy one. They are simply working hard to keep members of the TEA party, the Christian Right, and the various “Patriot” groups on their side. They’ve done a remarkable job of hurting women, hurting the poor, hurting the elderly, and hurting members of the LGBT community while constantly praying and singing the National Anthem. People like Graham and others of his ilk, are unashamedly trashing anyone and anything necessary, in order to advance their ideology. The words often attributed to Sinclair Lewis are prescient. “When Fascism comes to America, it will be carrying a cross and wrapped in a flag.” Wake up America!
