It’s always been hard to tell whether Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing AM radio “darling,” actually means the things he says or whether he’s just shilling for the despicable interests that seek to continue a status quo which marginalizes the least fortunate and perpetuates the dominance of America’s white male Christian evangelical power structure.
Tuesday, in an unhinged rant during The Rush Limbaugh Show, Rush inverted reality with the bizarre claim that it is the civil rights community that is being racist towards the oppressed white Americans in the south, and not the other way around.
Doing his best to stoke anti-government paranoia and scare white Americans into believing that laws created to prevent discrimination are actually discriminating against them, Limbaugh accused the federal government of wanting to “get even” at white Americans for their previous discrimination towards African-Americans by passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Making the case that there isn’t, nor ever was, any need for “affirmative-action,” Limbaugh grossly oversimplified reality by claiming that the law is reverse discrimination against those that “had not engaged in it.”
How can he claim that Southern states who passed Jim Crow laws have a “not engaged” in discrimination towards African-Americans?
Completely ignoring the fact that several states tried to pass racist voting laws in the run-up to the 2012 presidential election which were designed to keep minorities from getting into voting booths, Limbaugh was happy to pretend that racism is dead and that there are no reasons why Republican Governors would like to keep Democratic-leaning minorities from voting.
Why does Rush Limbaugh spew such bigotry? Is it because his followers crave justifications to their own–or is it because the right-wing money that funds his racist empire seeks to disenfranchise black voters?
Either way, it is absolutely shameful that the right-wing establishment embraces Rush Limbaugh as a visionary conservative.
