Republicans love fracking so much they’re willing to call anyone that speaks out against it as “crazy” “liberal” and “against job creation” even though members of the scientific community have been railing against them for years. The concept of spraying high-powered water into rocks in order to release the gases and oil trapped within them into the surrounding area doesn’t sound at all dangerous. I mean, it’s not like oil and gasoline aren’t edible, right?
It’s not merely the release of the shale, which is the desired result of fracking, but the disposal of the water that is left underground that is the major problem. We don’t pour biological or chemical waste into the ground without a huge outcry from both the left and right, but water contaminated by fracking? It appears one side of the political aisle is rather short-sighted, although looking at historical data on the predisposition of the right to ignore science proving harm towards humans and nature I suppose it’s not surprising.
Well a new scientific study has further confirmed just how dangerous fracking is.
Since Oklahoma began upping its increase in fracking, starting around 2008, the state has been the recipient of an influx of earthquakes never before seen in the region’s history. Many scientists have been hypothesizing, based on measurable data, that fracking is to blame for the uptick in earthquakes. As it turns out those hypotheses were correct!
Professor Katie Keranen of Cornell University, and a group of researchers, compiled data from seismic activities in relation to the location of pumping is in direct correlation with at least 20% of the earthquakes. In addition the range for effect from this contaminated water is not 5 miles as previously believed, but as far as 30 miles away!
New Dominion, the oil company responsible had this to say
While New Dominion has not had adequate time to thoroughly review the paper, an initial review reflects it is premised on certain false assumptions, at best…irresponsible and did not consult with NDL’s geologist and engineers to determine whether her premises are in any way correct.
Right. Remember when the gas companies LIED to the American public for over sixty years, stating that leaded gas was not harmful to humans, even using their own scientists to back their false statements – because some scientists truly have no scruples and willingly sell out to the highest bidder instead of adhering to truth and the scientific method.
This is something so glaringly true – and yet corporations continue to buy scientists off and pay them to lie so they can continue to line their pocketbooks at the expense of the human race. Neil DeGrasse Tyson did an excellent expose of it in one of his episodes of Cosmos.
I wonder what the right will pull out to try and falsify this scientific data.
