Fox “News” selectively aired clips of President Obama’s speech regarding the events in Ferguson, Missouri.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise, since Fox “News” is a mouthpiece for the GOP and Tea Party. They’ll do anything to make Obama look bad. In doing so, however, Fox did exactly what they accused the president of doing: They “set an atmosphere” of discord and violence.
Media Matters for America posted the full text of the part of Obama’s speech that Fox left out. Their legal analyst, Peter Johnson, Jr., said that the president “may have chosen a side too quickly.” In fact, as Media Matters notes, the president did not choose a side. Fox News merely made it appear that he did, by only airing the following:
“I know that many Americans have been deeply disturbed by the images we’ve seen in the heartland of our country, as police have clashed with people protesting. […] There’s also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests, or to throw protestors in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.”
In watching the video, it’s clear there’s a cut between the two sections, but that’s a fantastic way of making it sound like he’s only condemning the Ferguson police for excessive use of force. They left out one very important sentence, which is:
“There is never an excuse for violence against police, or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting.”
That sentence takes place before he said that there’s no excuse for police using excessive force against protesters. And it’s so egregious that not everyone over at Fox News liked it. Media Matters noted that Geraldo Rivera, of all people, disagreed with the idea that Obama chose sides in his speech. On Fox & Friends, Elizabeth Hasselbeck made a similar suggestion, and Rivera replied with:
“I think, in fairness to the president, maybe I would have had the sentences rearranged, but I thought he tried his best to do a measured presentation. He started with the urban violence and the fact that there’s no excuse for rioting and for looting.”
