Republican Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) thinks that women need to make more babies and have fewer abortions so that more jobs can be created and the economy will recover.
In a committee meeting, Goodlatte said, “I would suggest that it is very much the case that those of us in the majority support this legislation because it is the morally right thing to do but it is also very true that having a growing population and having new children brought into the world is not harmful to job creation.” He continued, “It very much promotes job creation for all the care and services and so on that need to be provided by a lot of people to raise children.”
Indeed, you heard him correctly. Make more babies and have fewer abortions so there are more jobs dependent on birth, child-rearing, housing, medical care, education, and whatever other industry is dependent on people for buying their products and services.
Goodlatte had nothing to say about what an increased population would do to the natural resources of the U. S., or what the environmental impact would be, or what impact an increased population would be on our shrinking undeveloped areas.
We can only surmise that the concept of quality of life has never occurred to Representative Goodlatte, except for those already heavily invested in real estate development and medical stocks. It’s also always nice to see Republicans lay the blame for our failing economy squarely at the feet of those responsible: women. You can listen to Goodlatte pontificate about the morality and just plain good business sense of keeping women pregnant here:
