In a piece here on Americans Against the TEA Party two days ago, we tried to gently lift the cover off the pressure cooker that was Paul Anthony Ciancia. What we found, painted an unsavory and dangerous picture of the 23 year old. We found a quotation from the Southern Poverty Law Center that offered their analysis:
“Ciancia’s language and references seemed to put him squarely in the conspiracy-minded world of the antigovernment “Patriot” movement. The New World Order refers to a longstanding conspiracy theory that today, in its most popular iteration, claims that global elites are plotting to form a socialistic “one-world government” that would crush American freedoms. Often, the root of the alleged conspiracy is traced to the 1913 creation of the Federal Reserve and the adoption of fiat currency — paper money that is not backed by gold, as it was once was in the U.S.”
Those descriptors align pretty clearly with public perceptions of TEA party members. Of course, since “TEA party” isn’t listed as an option on most voter registration forms, and no one actually bothered to check his political affiliation because it seemed rather obvious. But, according to an article in The Free Patriot, they have uncovered the real dirt”
“Well, as it turns out that the Salem County Clerk’s office has a way to tell you for sure. For $12, you can pull the voter registration records of anyone that signed up in the county. One man on the internet named “Mike” did just that to end the dispute once and for all. Turns out that the Paul Anthony Ciancia of Salem, New Jersey, born in 1990, that moved to LA, California, was a registered Democrat.”
Now please note the name of the website that “broke’ this story. The word “patriot’ for some reason evokes different mental images than it did in the 1950s. The SPLC quote above does a good job of pointing out the new connotations of that word. I also found another report that proclaimed Ciancia’s Democratic affiliation. It was a thinly documented (thinly as in non documented) report from a website interestingly named “FireAndreaMitchell.com.” Certainly no prejudice there. But my cursory search of google hits on “Ciancia is a democrat” yielded little if any good documentation. It’s not that I’m doubting “Mike from the internet”, its just that this theory doesn’t seem to have the weight of proof behind it.
What I am concerned with however, is comments in his manifesto that among other things, called NSA Director Janet Napolitano a “bull dyke”, statements expressing his hatred for blacks, homosexuals, and the NSA and their affiliate the TSA. He also clearly expressed his concern about the “New World Order”, a right wing-driven conspiracy theory that believes a secret group of elitists has been plotting since 1917 to force Socialism on the entire planet.
So is he a registered Democrat? Is he a registered Republican? Is he a registered TEAbagger (not possible in most states)? Who cares. All I know for sure is the old saying, “if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck”…it’s a friggen duck!
Ciancia’s anti-government views were known early, as MSNBC’s coverage of the incident shows:
