Laura Ingraham, right-wing anti-immigration zealot extraordinaire, took to the airwaves recently to announce with the certitude that only the most arrogant and least informed can ever muster: “Your language — in fact, your language is not only in decline, the English language; it’s actually a sign of jingoism.”
Here’s the full quote:
[box type=”shadow”]INGRAHAM: No, your language is gone. Your language — in fact, your language is not only in decline, the English language, Chris, it’s actually a sign of jingoism. Because remember the La Raza is all about — the movement underneath La Raza, which defines the race – right, translates as “The Race” — is: This is our land. You took our land. We’re coming to take it back.
That’s what the fanatics really think. That’s not what Paul Ryan thinks, but that’s what those people think. And Nancy Pelosi and La Raza are licking their chops about this immigration reform.[/box]
From the wiki: “Jingoism also refers to a country’s advocation of the use of threats or actual force against peaceful relations, either economic or political, with other countries in order to safeguard what it perceives as its national interests. Colloquially, it refers to excessive bias in judging one’s own country as superior to others—an extreme type of nationalism.”
Coincidentally, that sounds like a pretty succinct definition of the Tea Party. Hello, Tea Pot, meet Kettle.
Loony Laura babbled on to her remarkably ignorant caller, Chris, who demonstrated that a career in a helping profession such as nursing does not mean you’re a good person by whining about having to explain to patients their follow-up care and rights. Ingraham tried to explain that ‘La Raza’, loosely translated, that means ‘community’ or ‘people’, was a mainstream movement that wanted to take back parts of the U.S. by flooding them with Mexicans.
We will wait a moment while you bang your head against your computer desk.
La Raza is indeed a real movement. However, once again, the factually-challenged right has it wrong. when they compare NCLR to the KKK. One is a civil rights group. The other is a bigoted, toothless, horny mob hanging children from trees and setting peoples’ homes on fire while screaming nationalistic slurs in broken English, y’all.
The English language also is not “deteriorating”. The American Prospect stated that the notion that immigrants don’t learn English is “a myth,” saying, “Today’s immigrants from Asia and Latin America are following exactly the same pattern of linguistic assimilation as their predecessors from Northern and Southern Europe, and at a comparable rate: Their children tend to be bilingual, and the third generation produces largely monolingual English speakers. In other words, across time, linguistic assimilation takes care of itself.”
The truth, however, will not deter Ms. Ingraham!
