Laura Ingraham’s opinion of whether a given protest is made up of “freedom fighters” or a “lynch mob” is, shall we say, rather heavily biased. And that’s just putting it politely.
Media Matters for America took a long, hard look at Ingraham’s stances on the protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and the standoff between Cliven Bundy and government official. Naturally, they found the heavy bias that’s rather typical of people of her ilk.
When it comes to the situation in Ferguson, Ingraham thinks that’s just a “local, criminal” story, and the protesters make up a lynch mob. On August 14, according to Media Matters, she actually complained that the story was getting way too much attention. She even blamed the media for sensationalizing the story and putting it on the national stage.
However, when it came to Cliven Bundy, her remarks back in April were considerably more positive. She called that an act of mere civil disobedience, because of course white people threatening government officials with big guns amounts to mere civil disobedience. Ingraham also saw that situation as part of a bigger fight against big government; specifically, those allegedly illegal government land grabs.
Using 200 federal officers to try and enforce the order that Bundy get his cattle off of federal land was, in Ingraham’s estimation, “a ridiculously disproportionate response.”
But police using rubber bullets, armored trucks, and tear gas to disperse a crowd of protesters who are mostly peaceful is a perfectly normal, perfectly proportional response. Those protesters obviously should have expected police to respond that way, right? Right.
Might this really come down to race? Again? It’s sad to draw that conclusion, but that is, unfortunately, one of the more logical conclusions to draw. It comes down to the idea that militia-style protests involving mostly white civilians threatening to shoot federal officials is staunch, all-American patriotism, especially in the eyes of people like Ingraham.
If that’s the case, then yes, she would see that as mere civil disobedience, but decry the protests in Ferguson because those people are not white, and are not carrying big guns. If they were carrying big guns, though, she surely would stand by any additional police shootings that happened, because these are black people. The horror.
Listen to Laura Ingraham’s biased views.
