On today’s Real Story with Gretchen Carlson, the eponymous Mrs. Carlson spoke with Representatives Devin Nunes (R-CA) and Adam Smith (D-Wa) about the government shutdown and the proposed deal today, re-opening the government and averting a default on the national debt.
When asked if they believe the bill will pass, they both agreed that it would, and Smith added, “The shame of it is, this is something we could have done back in the beginning of October.”
Carlson followed that statement by putting down her Fox News hat and picking up the hat of a real journalist and asked, “Isn’t this what Americans hate, quite frankly, about you guys, members of Congress? That this is something that could have been done long ago and here we are again?” Nunes’ response to her question is pure gold, and a real sign of the dysfunction that is our current political climate.
“…the bottom line is in order to make cuts it’s hard for members to pass that vote,” Nunes said. Yes, it is indeed hard to do the right thing when your political career is on the line.
Unfortunately, the business of politics has become about getting re-elected and not about doing what’s best for the country. Some, like Ted Cruz, are so delusional that they think what they’re doing actually IS for the benefit of the country, but the majority of the House is filled with spineless sycophants either begging for money from their rich donors or playing games with the well-being of the nation in order to try and impress their constituents at home.
What is even more unfortunate is that there is little political will in Washington to actually change anything. So as the anger and frustration of the people boils and builds, Washington continues playing games. Let’s just hope if the deal goes through that the new year isn’t marred by round 2 of this battle.
