The Ku Klux Klan is donning the proverbial blue tights and red cape, and preparing to swoop into action in Ferguson, Missouri to defend the white man against uppity black folks who are expressing anger over the murder of an unarmed African-American teenager.
As the Grand Jury decision whether or not to indict Officer Darren Wilson looms, with rumors swirling that the officer will walk free without a trial, the KKK predicts that the scary black people will rise up and destroy everything — and Frank Ancona, the Imperial Wizard who promises a kinder, gentler Klan, claims the Ferguson protests are bolstering his numbers.
Ancona says that his “Klanline,” basically a Batphone for cross-burning psychopaths, is flooded with calls from those who are eager to don hoods. He says that 50 new members have been added to Missouri’s chapter of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan this month alone, and that numbers are rising in Ohio and Alabama, as well.
“These Ferguson protesters are the best recruiters since Obama,” he told the Riverfront Times. “Normally we might hear from ten people a week in Missouri, and now we’re hearing from more like fifty people a week. Sometimes, depending on these news stories, we get 100, 200 calls in a day.”
However, Ancona is upset with other Klan chapters who helped lead the charge in raising “reward” money for Officer Wilson. “Personally, I think we need to wait until we see all the facts, all the evidence that’s being gathered…. I don’t want to try to gain or exploit this situation,” said Ancona, who is both exploiting the situation for numbers, and gaining new members for his efforts, in August.
However, the time to stay silent is through, Ancona now says, gaining the voice of “We Are Darren Wilson” protesters. With a slew of alleged death threats made against officers, Ancona can not keep up the “we love everyone” facade any longer.
“I call them terrorists, not protesters,” he said of the mostly peaceful group demanding that Wilson be indicted. Ancona’s group released a flyer promising to use “lethal force” against the “violent” predominantly African-American protesters.
“You have awakened a sleeping giant,” the flier reads. “The good people of St. Louis County of all races, colors and creeds will not tolerate your threats of violence against our police officers, their families and our communities.”
“You have been warned by the Ku Klux Klan!” it concludes. “There will be consequences for your acts violence against the peaceful law abiding citizens of Missouri.”
“We’re basically going where we’re being asked to go,” Ancona explained. “We’re being low key, we’re not trying to inflame any situation anywhere, but we’re also letting it be known that we’re here to help people if they need us.” However, Ancona still says he’s not racist, citing the “all races, colors, and creeds” line.
“It would hypocritical for us to pin this on the black race when you can clearly watch footage on TV and you see white people as well as black people,” Ancona said. “All those people need to be on notice.”
