Will suggested that the NSA’s practice of collecting phone records was in some way tied to a grand conspiracy involving the IRS and President Obama.
But, in 2006 Will wrote, “Besides, terrorism is not the only new danger of this era. Another is the administration’s argument that because the president is commander in chief, he is the ‘sole organ for the nation in foreign affairs” when George W. Bush was in office, clearly expressing his concern for American’s privacy years before Obama even took office. After pulling out a printed version of the column and reminding Will of his own words, Ellison stated,
You were talking about George Bush at that time. You know, George, I actually don’t disagree with much you said. My only problem is, you can’t make this an Obama problem. This is an executive problem.
