In the latest example of TEApublican obsession over controlling women’s reproductive rights, the very conservative state of Kansas, which likely has more anti-abortion billboards than trees, is set to pass a law stating that life begins at fertilization.
The bill passed the House by a 90-30 vote after it had passed the Senate by a 28-10 tally. Notoriously conservative and anti-abortion governor Sam Brownback is expected to sign the bill into law.
The bill is called the Women’s Right To Know Act and if signed into law, prohibits abortions related to the baby’s sex and blocks tax breaks for health care providers that perform abortions. It will not outlaw abortion itself, and the provision notes that any rights suggested by the language are limited by decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court. But successfully declaring that life begins at fertilization will open doors to other laws being passed to restrict abortion, and possibly, ban it completely down the road. This is the ultimate goal of “personhood” bills like this, which have already been passed in similar form in 13 other states. Talcott Camp, deputy director of the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project, said the language could eventually “open the door to extreme interpretation of other laws. It provides something that future bill sponsors would point to, and say, `This is already Kansas law.’ ”
And that, fellow Liberals, is what we should be concerned about with laws like this.
