He noted that after the Republicans “red weddinged” the Democrats in the elections last November, they were crowing that finally something would get done in Congress with them controlling both the House and Senate. They assured us that now they would show us that they were “ready to govern.”
The fight began when the House sent a bill to the Senate that would fund DHS — only if the president’s Executive Orders on immigration are nullified and Senate Democrats threatened to filibuster if they were not given a clean bill to vote on. Mitch McConnell compromised and offered to put the language to rescind the president’s orders in another bill and the Senate passed a clean bill for Homeland Security.
That bill was, of course, dead on arrival in the House. Speaker John Boehner offered a compromise which would have extended funding for another three weeks, but the far right faction would not accept even that, finally settling on a bill for a one week extension meaning that they have to find a way to continue funding by this coming Friday.
“To stop the president from being too lenient on illegal immigration, you want to defund the department that secures the border,” Jon said, illustrating the insanity of the move.
Stewart said that the question of “where’s the turd clogging our legislative plumbing” has been answered — It is the House Republicans.
