Every year as December rolls around, you can count on at least a handful of right-wing pundits to start in with the “War on Christmas” rhetoric. Luckily, every year we can also count on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to gleefully, intelligently and with surgeon-like precision, immolate their arguments.
On last night’s episode, Stewart summarized the feelings of the right-wing noise machine on Christmas about as well as anyone ever has when he asked,
“What is it like to live in that world of pure fear and despair, where every inconsequential change in what was, becomes a harbinger of a dystopian, post-America apocalypse?”
Then there was the question he asked while mockingly playing the part of a Fox News commentator. “How can I enjoy my Christmas, when I know that somewhere there’s a little Jewish boy not being forced to sing ‘Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem?'”
When a clip of Palin was played where she said she “leaves a Menorah” out during December to show she has tolerance of other religions, Stewart pointed out that Jewish people don’t just leave it out like a “knickknack in a curio cabinet.” To O’Reilly’s baleful moans about the use of “Happy Holidays” when this year Hanukkah is over before Christmas, the comedic veteran simply pointed out that O’Reilly was not only ignoring holidays like Kwanzaa and New Year’s Eve, but by his own logic, no one should be allowed to say anything but “Happy Hanukkah” until Christmas rolls around.
Stewart’s riff on O’Reilly’s ire for Macy’s is amazing, but a little NSFW, so we’ll just let you get to that bit yourself.
