It’s been a long time since the city built around Wall Street had a real Democrat in office, and the way things are looking, the Big Apple couldn’t be more eager to see it through. With the latest NYT polls registering 68-23, it’s all but certain that Democrat Bill de Blasio will soon be sitting in Rudy Giuliani’s old chair.
Bill DeBlasio is that he’s a long way from politically perfect. As John Oliver says in The Daily Show (with Jon Stewart) clip below, he lacks the high-level management experience of his opponent, Republican Joe Lhota, who was chairman and CEO of the MTA and deputy mayor under Giuliani. A fact which John Oliver pointed out, when in this clip he shouted up to a giant DeBlasio:
“Hey… de Blasio! Your idealistic policies and lack a management experience will be woefully insufficient in the face of focused Wall Street Lobbying!”
He also drew some ire from critics for his visits to Cuba and Nicaragua in 1988 to distribute food and medical supplies to many, including the Communist Sandinastas — for whom he expressed “admiration.” He’s also had some shady meetings with lobbyists from Extell, a shady real estate developer known for building condos with separate entrances for the richest and the least richest tenants. Maybe that’s what Oliver meant about “focused Wall Street lobbying.”
So, de Blasio is a long way from politically ideal. But he’s also NOT something else…a “dying party” Republican. He’s not a “fiscal conservative,” which for anyone in downtown New York means one who “starves the poor to feed the rich” and “kisses the rings of Wall Street” — a condition made more evident by the fact that Lhota has drawn the dollars of a number of “business support” PACs. The very same that favored Michael Bloomberg — the literal definition of the billionaire Wall Street plant.
Here’s what de Blasio IS, though: He’s a guy who has a history of crushing Republican opponents, 63-38 in his first election to public office, and a massive 78-18 in his second. He’s the candidate who outlined a plan to raise taxes on those making more than $500,000 a year to pay for Pre-K school programs, and end state-sponsored private charter schools. He opposed the NY Housing Authority’s decision to cut off Section 8 housing vouchers, went after the worst slum lords in the city and has been a very vocal opponent of Citizens United. He’s also an opponent of stop-and-frisk, which has turned his city into a police state for anyone not wearing a power suit.
In short, de Blasio is a real Democrat, if not an outright Socialist…just like he was when he worked as a volunteer coordinator for New York’s last real Democrat mayor, David Dinkins, in the 1989 mayoral campaign. You can bet that those blackhearts in their glass castles are about to look down on a far different world than the one they had under Money McBloomberg.
Besides, those same blackhearts have already accused DeBlasio of “class warfare.“ So he must be doing something right.
