Last night on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” the show opened with a three minute segment covering the so-called “nuclear option” invoked by Senate Democrats. The show’s host quickly pointed out just how absurd the term “nuclear option” really is, and with all the sarcasm we’ve come to expect and love from the comedic veteran. “So deciding to allow ‘majority rules’ to incrementally increase governmental efficiency in presidential appointments is so unthinkably extreme it’s the nuclear option,” Stewart asked. Then he further demonstrated the term’s hyperbole, “It’s just like Hiroshima of voting.”
It wasn’t just the hyperbolic nature of the term “nuclear option” that Stewart lambasted though — he took on the silly hyperbolic rhetoric of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell as well. After playing a clip of McConnell chastising Democrats for changing the filibuster rules because one day they’d be in the minority again, Stewart landed the equivalent of a comedy hay-maker to McConnell. “Mark my words! One day you Democrats may want to be obstructionist as*holes making a mockery of our system of government, and who will be laughing then? Turtle Man.” Then in classic “Daily Show” form, he finished his rant by expanding on McConnell’s over the top dire warnings of all hell breaking loose as he intoned in a faux-serious tone that after the nuclear option was exercised, “Christmas was abruptly canceled and babies were born knowing all the curse words.”
