The Islamic State of Syria and Iraq has released another video in which they claim to have beheaded another American journalist the group is holding hostage. Stephen Joel Sotloff, a reporter for Time and Foreign Policy magazine, has been held hostage since August 2013.
In the video, titled A Second Message to America, Sotloff says, ““I’m sure you know exactly who I am by now and why I am appearing before you,” Sotloff was made to say. “And now it is time for my message.” He continued, “Obama, your foreign policy of intervention in Iraq was supposed to be for preservation of American lives and interests, so why is it that I am paying the price of your interference with my life?”
The militant group announced its intention to execute David Cawthorne Haines, a British hostage who does security work for aid groups, if air strikes against ISIS continue, “So just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people,” the cowardly masked executioner said.
Recently, the group forced journalist James Foley to read a statement before executing him in the same fashion.
As President Obama has scrambled for solutions, conservatives have been playing the blame game without offering any substantial suggestions, and questioning the President’s lack of a necktie while the rest of the world grieved Foley’s death.
The authenticity of the video was confirmed by President Obama and other officials early Wednesday morning — and the President has a solution to the problem.
“Our objective is clear and that is to degrade and destroy ISIL so it’s no longer a threat—not just to Iraq but also to the region and to the United States,” Obama said on Wednesday. He said that this would be achieved through ground assaults and air strikes, as well as regional cooperation.
“The first phase has been to make sure that we’ve got an Iraqi government that is in place and and we are blunting the momentum that ISIL was carrying out and the airstrikes have done that. Now what we need to do is make sure that we’ve got the regional strategy in place that can support an ongoing effort, not just in the air but on the ground to move forward,” President Obama said. “It’s something that over time is gonna be effective.”
“Today our country grieves with [Sotloff’s family],” Obama said. “Whatever these murderers think they can achieve by killing innocent Americans like Steven, they have already failed.”
“Steven’s life stood in sharp contrast to those who murdered him so brutally – they make the absurd claim that they kill in the name of religion, but it was Steven, his friends say, who deeply loved the Islamic world. His killers try to claim that they defend the oppressed, but it was Steven who travelled across the Middle East risking his life to tell the story of Muslim men and women demanding justice and dignity.”
