It is hard to imagine why otherwise rational people go out to shop on Black Friday when there are so many more compelling reasons to stay at home and relax after having gorged on turkey, candied sweet potatoes, stuffing, mashed potatoes and green bean casserole the day before.
Black Friday is not just about bargains; it has also become about ruthless and uncivilized behavior that often leads to injuries, both minor and serious, and even death.
In the last seven years on this day there have been 67 reported injuries and 4 deaths, the number of injuries may be higher since all may not be reported.
What does it say about us when we behave so callously toward our fellow human beings all in the name of getting that bargain on a new TV set or video game? Have we really fallen so low that it means more than compassion and decent behavior?
This video of a fight last year in a Walmart in Johnson City, Tennessee over a TV set is an example of the primitive behavior way too many of us are capable of on this day, and it should give us all pause to ask ourselves if it is really that important to save a few dollars.
