The Secret Service arrested an Iowa man today about a block from the White House — a fellow by name of Renae Kapheim, aged 41 years old. According to the Secret Service, Kapheim approached a couple of uniformed SS officers on foot at the intersection of 15th and E street.
He told them “someone had told him to come to the White House.” Realizing something was decidedly not right about the man, the men in black asked him if they could search his car. When they did, they found a 30-30 hunting rifle and boxes of ammunition.
This rifle, which has an effective and accurate range of between 200 and 250 yards, uses the same diameter bullet as an AR-15 or M-16. Though much older and about a quarter less powerful than its newer military cousin, this generally accurate Winchester round has been used for over a hundred years in lever action rifles to take down game as large as Canadian moose.
In other words: plenty enough to kill a president from a block away.
Kapheim has been taken into custody and charged with possession of an illegal firearm — a felony in gun-banned Washington D.C., where Kapheim may spend the next year or more explaining what he was planning to do with it.
In reality, though, it’s more likely Kapheim will end up receiving mental treatment than real jail time. Especially when he tells the judge that the person who “told him to come to the White House” lives inside of his left ear and speaks in ancient Sumerian.
Just another responsible gun enthusiast, visiting the White House.
