We have reported three separate death threats against the President in the last few days and that appears to be just the tip of the iceberg. The Secret Service does not tell even the President how many death threats they investigate, but there are indications that there may be as many as 30 a day — with a total of about 40,000 since 2007.
As we reported here, Everest Wilhelmsen posted on his Facebook page Christian American Patriots Militia, “We now have authority to shoot Obama, i.e., to kill him.” This authority, he claims, comes from — get ready for it — the Second Amendment. This is apparently the only part of the Constitution that means anything to right wing extremists who now dominate the Republican party.
Wilhelmsen’s page has been reported many times. Although the the Secret Service is aware of it, the page remains up but the death threat post has been taken down. The comment was removed after one user appealed, but we are told that he reposted it elsewhere.
He is not alone however, and there were arrests made just this week after investigations by the Secret Service into reported threats.
An 81 year-old man who is a devotee of Rush Limbaugh and an avowed birther was arrested after being reported for having made threats against the President’s life. Elwyn Nels Fossedal, of Wisconsin who an investigator reported “is proficient in the use of various firearms,” was arrested and is being held after an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Madison.
Fossedal, not only admitted to making the remarks when investigators questioned him, he repeated them again in the presence of the Secret Service.
Then we have the Connecticut student, Joshua Klimas, 32, who was arrested last Wednesday after taking the brilliant action of sending an email to Whitehouse.gov back in June telling the President, “If you do not resign by the end of the year, I will kill you.”
The arresting agent said that not only did Klimas admit to having sent the message, but said that he considered it his duty to kill the President in order to protect the Constitution.
There have been many others over the last 6 years, including in 2009 when a woman in Hawaii who knew the First Family’s itinerary was arrested after she threatened to “blow away” the First Lady.
Last January a man in Clinton Township, Michigan was investigated after a bank employee reported that he had heard him say that the President needed to die and that he knew someone who could “get the job done.”
Another Michigan man, James Allen Meyers of Dearborn Heights was arrested after making calls to the FCC and National Geographic magazine saying, “I’m gonna hang our. . .president from a tree outside the White House with a burning cross and a swastika on the lawn.”
What we do know is that there are way too many of these incidents, them and way too many right wing public figures are being allowed to get away with inciting them. One day, they can probably expect to one day answer the door to find an extremely overworked and probably cranky Secret Service agent who will not find their rantings to be at all amusing.
