Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has introduced an amendment aimed at overturning the federal ban on Americans carrying guns when they visit the post office.
The proposal was quickly endorsed by the National Association for Gun Rights, which claimed that gun-free zones were in fact “criminal safe-zones.” The group urged its members to support Senator Paul’s amendment, saying that Americans should not be left at “the mercy of would-be criminals.”
Far from attempting to leave citizens defenceless, the federal ban on guns was introduced after several mass-shootings took place in post offices. The most infamous of these was the massacre in Edmond, Oklahoma in 1986, from which the term “going postal” was coined. Postal Service employee Patrick Sherill murdered 14 of his co-workers before committing suicide. It remains the deadliest mass-shooting at a place of work in American history.
For the moment, the darling of the Tea Party will have to wait. Committee members declined to attach the amendment to the bill, saying that it required more study.
According to thinkprogress.com, this amendment is the latest in a series of attempts by the GOP and the Tea Party to water-down restrictions on firearms, despite the large-scale prevalence of gun violence and mass-shootings in the United States:
“In the months after the Newtown massacre, more senators voted for an amendment to weaken gun safety laws than the major initiative to strengthen them through expanded background checks.”
Like so many Second Amendment fundamentalists, Senator Paul is either woefully or wilfully ignorant of the arcane nature of the Second Amendment, as well as the reality of gun violence in the United States. An American is far more likely to be killed or to harm a loved one if they own a firearm.
Despite this the pro-gun lobby in the US, through an elaborate and well-funded campaign of misinformation and scare-mongering, still continues to effectively peddle the myth that guns are an inalienable feature of American liberty and essential to personal safety. However public opinion is turning against this, and has been doing so for many years.
The movement to protect Americans from gun violence have the facts and all the evidence on their side. It is time they used this to mount a much more robust attack on these merchants of death and violence.
