It’s hard to know what to make of this one. Depending on your perspective, this may be a case of mob justice, mob injustice, class warfare, a case for concealed carry or any number of other political talking points. But no matter which side of the aisle you stand on, there’s no way to justify what you’re about to see. [divider]
(A Ron Paul Vision of Paradise)
The driver of the SUV, a 33 year-old driving through New York with his wife and 2 year-old child, was out celebrating he and his wife’s first anniversary. Driver Alexian Lien was minding his own business, doing the speed limit, when the group surrounded him and a Hollywood Stuntz rider cut in front of him. After brake-checking the 5,000-pound SUV in a miscalculated attempt to prove his bravery, the rider found himself clipped by the SUV’s fender. He broke his leg after falling off the bike, and the SUV driver slowed to a stop in the road. The 30 or so Bikers didn’t give him much of a chance to explain; the moment the SUV stopped, bikes surrounded it and a man began stalking toward the SUV. Off camera, bikers already around the SUV began to whip off their helmets and bash the $100,000 Range Rover. At least one tire got slashed. In a panic to protect his family, the SUV driver gunned the throttle and drove over the fallen bike, and another one parked in front of it. You can see in the video how the six-minute long high-speed chase proceeded from there. After getting off the freeway, parked behind another car (and surrounded by other members of the public), the driver nailed the throttle again as a biker ran up and pulled open his driver-side door. The chase continued, but the driver was forced to stop because of one or more slashed tires. It’s likely that the Range Rover’s optional run-flats just couldn’t handle the high-speed chase.

The video stops when the bikers finally catch up to him and bash in his window with a helmet. Not shown are the minutes that immediately follow, The man suffered two black eyes and a few other non-life threatening injuries; he was released from Columbia University Medical Center after receiving some stitches.
The police later examined surveillance tape from a gas station where bikers stopped for gas. After the event, they fanned out around Manhattan, arresting 15 motorcycle riders for unrelated offenses and confiscating 55 motorcycles that might or might not have been related to the attack. One biker arrested was related to the attack; 28-year-old Christopher Cruz has been charged with reckless endangerment, menacing, reckless driving and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17 years old. The driver who originally cut in front of Lien’s SUV is currently in the hospital, with serious back injury and a good chance of becoming a paraplegic. According to the ever-reliable Fox “News,” the rider’s father, a Reverend named Edwin Mieses posted on Facebook:
“My son just got out of surgery. Now we have to contend with his situation that he will never walk again.”

It’s hard to know exactly what to make of this tragedy. You can politicize it if you want to, and no doubt many will: That the victim was a 33-year-old executive at Skrill.com (an online bank similar to PayPal) and driving a $100,000 SUV could be ammunition in the “Class Warfare” gun. And it’s a pretty good shot…had to happen eventually, after all of the shots that have been fired down from the top by money men on Wall Street. Still…Lien didn’t actually do anything wrong, he stopped when he was supposed to and didn’t do anything that anyone wouldn’t do to protect his family. Some are going to pull out the “minority bikers,” “liberal mob” and “victimized rich” cards. And that’s a hard thing to argue. They’ll even say that Lien should have been carrying a gun, which might have helped. Or it might have turned a beating and a paraplegic into a whole pile of dead bodies. You could also blame the cops for not showing up earlier…then again, the whole thing took place over the course of perhaps 7 minutes. Or, you could be realistic. These idiots were just a bunch of overly-testosteroned douchebags looking to impress their friends. No motorcyclist who brake-checks a 5,000-pound SUV thinks far enough ahead to have a political agenda. It’s sad to see a young man pay for the stupidity of youth by sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. But it could have been a lot worse. Particularly if that driver had been a little less nice. Never mind one guy getting run over — a Floridian probably would have gone full-on Thunderdome with that big SUV.

Maybe it’s a sign of the times, and how much hate is flowing through our country’s veins right now. Maybe Ron Paul’s dreams have finally come true, and we’ve degenerated into a place where the Road Warrior is now officially DMV policy. Or maybe…oh…screw it. Nevermind. Manhattan might be devolving into a post-apocalyptic Hellscape…but at least it’s still better than Russia.
