Happer, a professor at Princeton University who specializes in physics and optics (but not climate), said:
“the demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler. Carbon dioxide is actually a benefit to the world, and so were the Jews.”
This isn’t the first time he’s said something to this effect, either; in 2009, he testified before the United States Senate:
I keep hearing about the “pollutant CO2,” or about “poisoning the atmosphere” with CO2, or about minimizing our “carbon footprint.” This brings to mind another Orwellian pronouncement that is worth pondering: “But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.” CO2 is not a pollutant and it is not a poison and we should not corrupt the English language by depriving “pollutant” and “poison” of their original meaning….CO2 is absolutely essential for life on earth.
He also has a penchant and particular enthusiasm for Godwin’s Law; during an Daily Princetonian interview, five years ago, he said:
This is George Orwell. This is the ‘Germans are the master race. The Jews are the scum of the earth.’ It’s that kind of propaganda….Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant….To say that that’s a pollutant just boggles my mind. What used to be science has turned into a cult.
Of all the things to compare Jewish people to, of all the ways to pull Godwin in the climate change “debate” . . . this has to be one of the single most aggressively stupid things that I never thought I’d see.
I almost admire the audacity that Happer has on display here; he’s waving that red herring around like a hunk of meat summoning the dogs for dinner. CO2 is a pollutant. Oxygen is also a pollutant, as is CH4. But these are vital for life on Earth. That they’re vital for life on Earth doesn’t change that in large doses they’re still dangerous — for instance, the doses that we’re dumping CO2 out in. All it does is derail the argument into bickering over semantics.
And if you still don’t believe that, ask yourself this: does Venus, with it’s 96.5% CO2 atmosphere, sound like an ideal destination for a vacation? And before the trolls derail the thread; no, I’m not saying that we can turn Earth into Venus, although I’m beginning to wonder if some of the Big Oil execs are a bit envious that they can’t.
Watch this insane climate change denier make his crazy “demonization” remarks.
