The religious right has an unhealthy preoccupation with homosexuality. They are obsessed with the idea of eliminating it and will not give up no matter how much evidence they are presented, proving that it is not a moral failing but rather a biological predisposition people are born with.
The Family Research Council hosted an event on Wednesday in the ongoing campaign to eradicate homosexuality. Among the speakers was Robert A. Gagnon who attacked the very premise of a recent book by Christian author Matthew Vines, “God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships” which has the far right Christian community in an uproar.
Gagnon ridiculed Vines saying that where there were certain “sins” that had been allowed some license at one time, but that over time as the immorality was recognized, the loopholes which had allowed for things such as incest and polygamy were closed. He goes on to argue that since the Old Testament proscription against homosexuality has never been modified, that is proof that it is a greater sin than carrying on a sexual relationship with your daughter or marrying dozens of wives — a sin second only to bestiality in severity.
Gagnon dismisses Vines as young and lacking in expertise which makes him insignificant by comparison to the scholars he is in disagreement with.
When a questioner asked him how to deal with gay friends and neighbors, Gagnon said that a true Christian would show them the error of their ways, suggesting that it might be necessary for them to turn their backs on their gay friends and relatives if they are not willing to accept the “truth.”
