A kidnapped girl was killed Friday during a police shootout with the individual who kidnapped her.
The events began at about 7:30pm Friday, when Cadence Harris of Leavenworth, Kansas, was reported kidnapped. Police said that there was some relationship between her and her kidnapper, but wouldn’t provide any details.
After a chase that included Kansas and Missouri police which ended in the town Leavenworth, the suspect exited from his vehicle with a gun pointed at the officers and exchanged fire. It’s not clear if the abductor shot the girl or if she was hit by police gunfire in the exchange, but while the suspect survived, she did not.
The suspect is currently hospitalized in Kansas City. the Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called in to help investigate the matter further.
In a press conference, Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens called her death “tragic,” saying that the the situation transpired rapidly, and they were still trying to sort out what happened:
The matter unfolded quite rapidly. We are still trying to sort out specifically what happened.
