A four-year old girl in Detroit has shot and killed her four-year old cousin after finding a loaded gun.
The cousins were playing at their grandfather’s home when the girl pulled a small-caliber rifle out from under a bed. The two cousins were playing with it when the girl pointed the gun at her cousin’s chest, and fired. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. An adult was present in the house at the time, but it is not yet clear what relation he was to the children, or who owned the gun.
Police in Detroit called the incident “tragic,” “senseless” and “avoidable.” It is not yet known whether charges will be brought after a police spokesman said that there was clearly no malicious intent.
In December AATTP reported on a study published in Mother Jones magazine that found a staggering 194 children had been shot to death since the Newtown Massacre of 2012 in which 26 people were shot dead, including 20 children under the age of six.
This incident is tragic and shocking, but sadly not surprising. It is an unavoidable fact that in a country with such lax and inconsistent laws on safe storage and gun ownership “accidents” like this will happen. If Americans want to stop reading stories about child-on-child shootings, school massacres and domestic violence with guns they need only throw their support behind political candidates with the will to take on the pro-gun lobby, and make it clear that these types of incidents are not acceptable in a civilized society.
