CNN reports that the St. Louis police have shot and killed yet another African-American man on Tuesday, after authorities say they found he was brandishing a knife. KSDK reports that the 23-year-old man, who has not been identified, was shot in North St. Louis at 12:20pm after officers received a call for a disturbance in the area around Riverview Boulevard and McLaren Avenue.
According to St. Louis Police Chief, Sam Dotson, the suspect was described as “acting erratically” and “walking back and forth, up and down the street” while “talking to himself” after stealing energy drinks and pastries from a nearby convenience store. Dotson told the reporters that:
As officers arrived, the suspect turned towards the officers and started to walk towards them clutching his waistband. He then pulled out a knife … and told the officers, ‘Shoot me now. Kill me now.’
Dotson said that several witnesses, including a St. Louis alderman, watched the suspect act erratically. When the officers arrived, they initially remained inside of the patrol car, although when one got out of the vehicle, the suspect drew a knife from his waistband.
The officers repeatedly told the man to stop and drop his knife, but he continued to approach. He came within about four feet of an officer when both officers opened fire with their weapons, striking the suspect. The knife was recovered at the scene, which was where the unidentified suspect was pronounced dead.
The investigation is ongoing; this second shooting in St. Louis took place not far from where Michael Brown was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson.
The alderman who was witness to the suspect, Antonio French, told News Channel 5 that he talked to the community gathering at the scene, and reminded them that they don’t live in Ferguson, and implored them not to act violently. Dotson also spoke to the crowd as well, answering questions and telling them that it would be a quick investigation.
When asked if the shooting had been justified, Dotson said that he and his officers “have the right to go home at night.”
