In a horrific case of sick vigilantism, a Texas store owner fatally gunned down a man who allegedly ran out of his store without paying for two cases of beer.
The victim, who remains unidentified, was reportedly shot multiple times — including once in the head — by 51 year-old Rodney Duve. According to a report from KRIS-TV, the victim was a “known gang member.”
“He didn’t have to shoot the person for two cases of beer,” a neighbor said to KRIS-TV. “A life doesn’t equal two cases of beer.”
The neighbor went on to say that Duve was sometimes known for his temper. “On occasion when I came in [to the store], I saw him in a rage, a scary rage,” the neighbor said.
But in typical Texas fashion, not everyone disapproves of Duve’s actions. Texas blogger Stephen Kersey wrote that the police “have been quick to throw all the blame on a man who was simply trying to protect his business,” and that if a person doesn’t want to get shot, they shouldn’t make the choice to be a thief.
“It’s that simple,” Kersey writes. “Be a useful part of society and you won’t have to be worried.”
According to a report from The Daily Mail, Duve is being held on $35,000 bail.
