If we ever needed a perfect example of the constant escalation of conservative rhetoric that exists when they salivate over depriving a group of people of equal rights, we need look no further than South Carolina GOP Congressional candidate Anthony Culler.
Recently, Culler expressed concerns over the prospect of feeding LGBT people after midnight, or getting them wet in a hateful screed. “Same-sex couples that seek to destroy our way of life and the institution of marriage are NOT cute and cuddly but rather (for those of you that are old enough to remember the movie), Gremlins that will only destroy our way of life,” he said in a recent Facebook rant.
After facing harsh criticism for his disgusting expression of his First Amendment rights, Culler doubled down — expanding on his hate speech, and promising to protect residents from “the worst Gremlin outbreak in thirty years” by any means necessary, even if it involves a cannon.
One might assume, so close to election day in a heavily Democratic district, that Culler may learn to shut up. Of course, Culler is a proud Tea Party conservative — so he added a gun to the mix in a Wednesday posting.
He wrote,
Hilarious! Just when everyone in the gay/lesbian world was busy high-fiving and thinking that same-sex marriage was a “done deal” when the SCOTUS refused to hear appeals, an unknown republican nominee in South Carolina was typing on Facebook the opening salvo of a new call to action!
Operation Gremlin has completely surprised the same-sex marriage “victors” and they are reeling from this surprise attack. For those of you that seek a new opportunity to grab victory from the mouth of the gremlin then now is the time to mobilize your churches, friends, and family!
There has NOT been ANY official ruling and so let’s see same-sex marriage activists enforce this non-action! Only battles have been lost but the war continues!
The attached video is simple: To accompany his hateful screed, he aims a finger-gun at the camera to show how far he will go to defend against this invasion of “gremlins.”
“Pow, pow,” he says as he “fires” his “weapon.”
Culler’s antics have been so repugnant that even Penny Nance of Concerned Women for America, one of the nation’s most hateful anti-gay groups, issued a statement condemning his actions.
“Concerned Women for America (CWA) stands proudly in support of traditional marriage. However, neither side should engage in unkind, foolish verbal vomit. Anthony Culler has neither the temperament nor the judgment to thoughtfully represent the good people of the 6th district of South Carolina, and he certainly doesn’t represent the millions of Americans who support traditional marriage. CWA calls on both sides of this debate to show respect and humility in sharing our strongly held beliefs. As Americans, we should be able to debate this issue in a civil tone, making the case for our beliefs without being treated as ‘a pestilence,’ a ‘gremlin,’ or a ‘bigot.’ There are thoughtful people making high-level arguments for the importance of traditional marriage and against. Name callers distract and marginalize both perspectives.”
Even the chairman of the South Carolina State GOP has had enough. “Our party believes in the conservative definition of marriage, but we also believe in loving our neighbors and treating them with respect,” Matt Moore said. “Mr. Culler’s desperate attention seeking in no way represents the good, decent South Carolinians across our state.”
